The 2018 reboot of 'Tomb Raider' starring Alicia Vikander, while a step up from the Angelina Jolie version, wasn't the extravagant action bonanza we were promised. Regardless, the Roar Uthaug directed-film went on to amass $274.7 million worldwide.
Reportedly, the director of films 'Kill List' (2011) and 'Free Fire' (2016) will be presiding over the 'Tomb Raider' sequel. With Vikander reprising the titular heroine, Wheatley will be directing a script written by his co-writer Amy Jump. It is said that the Warner Brothers is longer a part of this project. Graham King will be the producer for the sequel, and MGM has set a release date of March 19, 2021.
Wheatley is currently busy with the post-production of his upcoming romantic thriller film 'Rebecca'. Based on Daphne du Maurier, the movie is the story of the new wife of a widowed man, who feels his former wife's shadow upon her after moving in with him in his English country home. 'Rebecca' stars Lilly James, Armie Hammer, Keeley Hawes, Kristin Thomas Scott, and Ann Dowd.
Ben Wheatley will begin shooting the sequel early next year.
