`City of God` director was given the Excellence in Cinema Award at the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival this year. The director, who was at the film festival on Tuesday with his Netflix drama `The Two Popes` starring Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce gave his two-cents on the whole `Marvel movies not being cinema` situation.

Meirelles was careful to articulate his thoughts and feelings, saying that `I watched Spiderman eight years ago that was a... I am not interested. Doesn't mean it is bad." The director also gave an informative MasterClass where he talked about the craft of filmmaking and his upcoming projects.

Fernando Meirelles is a Brazilian filmmaker who came to international acclaim when his crime film `City of Gods`. He then went on to make feature films in Hollywood such as `Blindness` and `The Constant Gardener` for which Rachel Weisz won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. His current film `The Two Popes` has been doing well at the film festival circuits, and will be available to stream on Netflix on December 20, 2019.
