Dakota Johnson will be leading writer-director Elaine May's movie "Crackpot" This is going to her first time behind the camera ever since "Ishtar" which came out in 1987. "Ishtar" starred Dustin Hoffman and Warren Beaty as two terrible lounge singers get booked to play a gig in a Moroccan hotel but somehow become pawns in an international power play between the C.I.A., the Emir of Ishtar, and the rebels trying to overthrow his regime.
The film was both a commercial and critical failure, and the blow was so fatal that she didn't make a movie until now as the 86 year-old filmmaker is on her way to a much-needed comeback. After "Ishtar" she returned to acting and also wrote movies such as "The Birdcage" and "Primary Colours".
May also directed a 2016 documentary "American Masters" about her friend and collaborator Mike Nicolls. She then starred in Woody Allen's Amazon series "Crisis in Six Scenes" and recently in Kenneth Lonergan's play "The Waverly Gallery" for which she won a Tony Award for Best Actress. We wish Elaine May all the best for the new chapter of her life!
