John Krasinski opens up about the real reason why he returned for 'A Quiet Place: Part 2', the highly anticipated follow-up to the hit 2018 post-apocalyptic horror film. 'A Quiet Place' grossed a whopping $340 million worldwide on a $17 million budget.
Krasinki's role in the film arose when viewers spotted him in the trailer. Set in a post-apocalyptic near future, where civilization is reduced to ruins following an attack by killer monsters highly sensitive to sound, A Quiet Place ended with Krasinki's character being killed off.
During an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, Krasinski explained how and why fans would see his character once again. He clarified that his appearance in A Quiet Place: Part 2 isn't a resurrection of his character nor is it a retcon of the first film's outcome. Instead, Krasinski's Lee Abbott will appear in one of the sequel's flashbacks, which are used to help explain how the world went silent. Emily Blunt further explained the flashback sequence. Through this new scene, "you really get a sense of what the world was and what the family was before it all happened."
"I totally understood why the studio wanted to do a sequel for financial reasons," he shared. "I didn't want anything to do with it because, weirdly, as much as I'm the writer-director, I'm also a huge fan of this movie. I didn't want to be a part of anything that would be viewed as a cash grab." Paramount Pictures started moving forward on the sequel without him after he turned it down. Producer Drew Form reached out to him for creative guidance on who might replace him and where the story might go. It was that nudge that helped persuade the actor-director to rethink his initial position.
The film is directed by John Krasinski, produced by Platinum Dunes, and distributed by Paramount Pictures. It stars Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe, Cillian Murphy, and Djimon Hounsou. Krasinski also reprises his role from the first film in newly-filmed flashback sequences. The film will hit the theatres on March 20th.
