The much anticipated Disney's live-action remake 'Mulan' has some interesting elements to it ahead of its release. Cinematographer Mandy Walker states that Liu Yifei, the actress that plays the title character, did 90% of her own stunts. Also, in a first for a Disney live-action remake, Mulan earns a PG-13 rating for 'sequences of violence'. Interestingly, the three heads of running were women- a female director, a female director of Photography (Walker herself) and a female first assistant director- something that is uncommon, especially in a big film.
Based on the Chinese folklore "The Ballad of Mulan", Hua Mulan is the eldest daughter of Hua Zhou who defies both tradition and the law by disguising herself as a man in order to enlist herself in the Imperial Army in place of her ailing father. Also, she has a special power called Qi (Chi), which means that she is actually an elite warrior.
Cinematographer Mandy Walker, along with director Niki Caro, shot everything in front of the camera. This means that those huge battle sequences that were teased in the trailers were meticulously choreographed in real life and weren't just magically created via CGI. She added that Liu Yifei did 90% of her own stunts, the horse riding, the sword fighting, the martial arts, and the battle sequences.
"We had 60 horses and 100 people for each side of the battle- so we had it for real, which I think you can really tell in the movie that it's not just extensions or CGI," Walker said.
Most of the Disney live-action remakes so far have closely resembled their animated counterparts but Mulan is taking a different approach. The film is notably getting rid of several elements from the animated film to tell a more grounded story. Disney's Mulan remake will instead feature the songs from the animated film as part of the score and not feature the talking-dragon Mushu. But this version does retain some fantastical elements to it, like one of the main villains is a witch. There is now another element to Disney's Mulan that will set it apart from the recent remakes from Disney. Mulan becomes the first Disney live-action remake to earn a PG-13 rating, 'for sequences of violence'.
Mulan is an upcoming American epic fantasy war drama film directed by Niki Caro and produced by Walt Disney Pictures. The film is based on the Chinese folklore "The Ballad of Mulan" and is a live-action adaptation of Disney's 1998 animated film of the same name. The film stars Liu Yifei as the title character, alongside Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Gong Li, and Jet Li in supporting roles. The film is scheduled to release on March 27th.
