Filmed in Italian, the eight-episode first season of My Brilliant Friend starred newcomers Elisa Del Genio and Ludovica Nasti as the younger versions of Elena and Lila, while Mazzucco and Girace portrayed teenage versions of the characters.



My Brilliant Friend is based on Ferrante's bestselling novels, which are published in the U.S. by Europa Editions. The first novel, My Brilliant Friend, came out in 2012. Each year, a subsequent book followed, including The Story of a New Name, Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay, and The Story of the Lost Child. The series has sold more than 10 million copies in 40 different countries.
