Disney's 20th Century title 'The Call of the Wild' lost the fight for box office supremacy narrowly to Paramount's 'Sonic the Hedgehog'. Paramount Pictures' 'Sonic The Hedgehog' is an adaptation of the video game and a treat for fans. The backgrounding is done carefully with great attention to detail. Small tidbits of information lie in the background that only die-hard fans will notice. The film released on January 25th (February 14th in the U.S.) and has been in close competition with Disney's live-action adaption of Jack London's novel, 'The Call of the Wild'.
On Friday, 'Call of the Wild' brought in $7 million to top 'Sonic', which brought in $6.2 million. By Saturday night, the hedgehog had overtaken the Harrison Ford starrer as it took in $12 million on the day versus $9.9 million.
Sonic the Hedgehog has a simple plot. Its a story of an extraterrestrial blue hedgehog being sent from his dangerous home planet to stay on Earth. Chris Sanders' live-action directorial debut 'The Call of the Wild' is an adaptation of Jack London's novel starring Harrison Ford and a CGI dog. The film's opening weekend estimated $24.8 million at the domestic box office. But Sonic, the classic video game adaptation, topped that with a $26.3 million take in its second weekend in theatres. Its domestic total is now over $100 million, and the worldwide gross is at $203.1 million.
Even though 'Call of the Wild' has a hefty $135 million budget, having Ford's name and Disney's marketing muscle helped a great deal. Even though the film is going great guns, it is a hollow victory, given how much the film cost. Paramount gets the rare two weekends in a row above the box office heap with 'Sonic'. The movie scored a rare box office win last weekend for the studio with a fantastic record of $64.6 million, over the Wild, and it must win again for Hollywood's oldest studio needs to find its lost glory.
