Chris Evans recently hung his shield after portraying Steve Rogers aka Captain America in MCU. But it looks like now, after playing the virtuous and high-minded character for a decade, Evans is taking a trip to the dark side. It started last year when he played the spoiled trust fund playboy, Hugh Ransom Drysdale in Rian Johnson's 'Knives Out', helping the murder mystery become a surprise hit. And now, he is in early negotiations to play the sadistic Dentist Orin Scrivello in Warner Bros. musical 'Little Shop of Horrors', a silver screen adaptation of the cult movie turned Broadway musical.
The Greg Berlanti directorial is courting Scarlett Johansson, another Avenger, and Taron Egerton, with Billy Porter, already signed up. The 1986 film 'Little Shop of Horrors' was a horror-comedy, directed by Frank Oz and starred Rick Moranis and Steve Martin, which grossed close to $39 million at the domestic box office. The film was based on the Off-Broadway musical of the same name by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman in 1982, which was based on the 1960 Roger Corman cult movie.
'Little Shop of Horrors' follows a nerdy florist, Seymour, played by Rick Moranis in the 1986 film. Seymour is secretly in love with Audrey but she has an abusive, sadistic boyfriend, Orin Scrivello. Seymour becomes a celebrity when he discovers a Venus flytrap-looking plant and names it Audrey 2. But his life gets disastrous when he finds out that the plant can speak and demands to be fed human blood and flesh. Emmy Award winner Billy Porter will be lending his voice to Audrey 2. The role of Orin Scrivello was made famous by Steve Martin in the 1986 film. Scrivello is the demented boyfriend of Audrey, who gets a rise from delivering pain to his patients.
Marc Platt, Sarah Schechter, and Berlanti are producing the new adaptation, which is set to shoot this summer. The film would reunite Evans with Johansson. They starred together in multiple Captain America and Avengers movies.
Chris Evans' next project is 'Defending Jacob', a limited series drama that he also produced, which is set to debut in April on Apple+.
