Harrison Ford will once again adorn the fedora and whip of Dr. Jones for the upcoming Indiana Jones 5 but unfortunately the same cannot be said for Steven Spielberg, who has chosen to hand over the director's chair to another filmmaker. Spielberg has been at the helm of all four Indiana Jones films ever since 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' 39 years ago. But this time, the director wanted to pass along Indy's whip to a new generation to bring their perspective to the story.
The core team of Indiana Jones comprised of three people: Producer George Lucas, Director Steven Spielberg, and star Harrison Ford. With Spielberg exiting, that leaves only Ford of the original franchise since Lucas has retired and is not expected to be officially involved with the fifth installment. But fans don't have to lose their heart as the filmmaker taking over the reins is James Mangold. While a deal hasn't been closed, sources close to Speilberg say so. Mangold's credentials include 'Logan' from The Wolverine franchise, 'Love Actually', 'Knight and Day', and the recent sports drama 'Ford v Ferrari'.
Spielberg remains as a hands-on producer for Indy 5. Meanwhile, Harrison Ford is still on the project. This will be his fifth time playing the famed archaeologist after 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' (1981), Temple of Doom (1984), The Last Crusade (1989), and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008). The actor recently made headlines when he said that the film will resolve issues from Indy's past while promoting his latest film 'The Call of the Wild'. "When we have an opportunity to make another, it is because people have enjoyed them. I feel obliged to make sure our ambitions are as ambitious as they were when we started." Ford said.
It will be the sequel to 'The Kingdom of The Crystal Skull' (2008). The film will be produced by Frank Marshall, Kathleen Kennedy, and Robert Allen Iger. The screenplay is by David Koepp and Jonathan Kasdan. A release date for Indiana Jones 5 hasn't been announced, but a 2021 release is likely.
