The creators of 'Avengers: Endgame', Anthony and Joe Russo, are teaming up with former U.S. President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama's Higher Ground Productions' to develop a Netflix movie.
The film is a feature film adaptation of Mohsin Hamid's 2017 bestselling novel 'Exit West'. Riz Ahmed, popularly known for roles in 'The Night Of' and 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story', has been signed to star in the film. The film will be directed by Yann Demange and written by Jessica Goldberg, who just wrote the Russo's next directorial project 'Cherry' (also a Netflix movie), and created the Hulu series 'The Path'.
The Obamas transitioned into producing post-White House, and signed a deal with Netflix and put their names behind movies like 'American Factory', which won an Oscar for Best Documentary, and the upcoming 'Crip Camp', which went well at this year's Sundance Film Festival. This should be the first narrative feature for the Obamas' Higher Ground production company unless they acquire another project before this one's completion.
The film is an interesting project and could be a great show for Riz Ahmed, who has been slowly building an excellent work profile. Ahmed would play Saeed in the love story with elements of fantasy and magical realism. He has also appeared in the blockbusters 'Venom' and 'Nightcrawler'. Here's the plot synopsis of the fantastical love story:
Exit West tackles the global refugee crisis and takes place in an unidentified country in the Middle East, where young Saeed and burqa-wearing Nadia flee their home after Saeed's mother is killed by a stray bullet stemming from violent clashes between guerrillas and the local government. The couple joins other migrants travelling to safer havens via carefully guarded doors. The system of magical doors leads them to different locations across the globe. In each location, their relationship is tested by their struggle to find food, adequate shelter and a sense of belonging among emigrant communities. The allegorical tale shows the contrast between the migrants' tenuous daily reality and that of the privileged native population who'd prefer that they disappear.
