Disney is working on a prequel series to the 2017 live-action remake 'Beauty and the Beast'. The prequel is headed to Disney+ focusing on Gaston and LeFou. Luke Evans and Josh Gad will reprise their roles of Gaston and LeFou respectively from the 2017 film that starred Emma Watson. Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, the creators of the popular 2011 ABC fairy-tale drama 'Once Upon a Time' and Apple TV+'s 'Amazing Stories', are reportedly creating the series, which is in its early stages.
The series is described as being an origin story to the two characters of self-obsessed Gaston, and his diminutive and bumbling sidekick, LeFou. It will "expand the Beauty and the Beast Universe". In fact, there might even be a possibility of Emma Watson and Dan Stevens making a guest appearance reprising their characters of Belle and the Beast respectively.
The limited series will comprise six episodes and have musical numbers. It is set before the events of the 2017 film. Disney+ declined to comment. The iconic composer Alan Menken is reportedly in negotiations to provide songs. He has composed music for both the 1991 animated film and the 2007 remake, and numerous other Disney productions.
Kitsis, Horowitz, and Gad will collectively work as showrunners, writers, and executive producers on the project. A sequel to another Disney live-action remake 'Aladdin' is also in the early stages of its development. This is just another example of Disney milking its animated classics.
