The Wade-Union trio attended the Truth Awards, an annual ceremony dedicated to celebrating accomplishments of the black LGBTQ+ community. They wore a coordinated custom made black, white, green and hot pink Richfresh suits accessorized by Lorraine Schwartz. Dwyane and Gabrielle both took to social media to share images from the evening as well as loving messages.
"It was an EPIC night filled with so much love & a real sense of community," Union wrote on Instagram. "It was important for Zaya to be a part of such a beautiful night & reminding her of all the love & support she has. We were moved to tears so many times throughout the night. So much gratitude."
The family attended the award ceremony supporting Zaya's godfathers, Jason Bolden and Adair Curtis, who were presented with the Business Leadership Award. Dwyane wrote on Instagram that the award show together was a "dope experience" for the trio.
"'I don't think I'm gay,' " he recalled her saying. " 'This is how I identify myself. This is my gender identity. I identify as a young lady. I think I'm a straight trans (girl) because I like boys.' "
Dwyane spoke about his LGBTQ+ child who the world previously knew as Zion. `I've been a person in a locker room that has been a part of the conversation that has said the wrong phrases and the wrong words myself,` Wade said. `And as I got older and as I watched my daughter grow, I had to go and look at myself in the mirror and say, 'Who are you? What are you going to do if your child comes home and says, `Dad, I'm not a boy ... I'm a trans girl.` What are you going to do?' That was my moment of real.`
