Charlie Kaufman offers a first look at his Netflix film I'm Thinking of Ending Things. Based on the novel penned by Iain Reid, I'm Thinking of Ending Things is a psychological thriller, written and directed by Kaufman. Following the critical success of Reid's novel, it didn't take long for a film version of the book to go into production. Kaufman - Oscar winner for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - along with Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad), has been attached to the project since its development.
Now, Kaufman offers images from the upcoming film. Speaking with EW, Kauffman reveals the film touches on `Loneliness, and hopelessness and regret, those are the things that are part of the fabric of the film." Adapted from Reid's Novel, I'm Thinking of Ending Things follows Jake (Plemons) and Jake's unnamed girlfriend (Jessie Buckley) as they venture on a road trip to Jake's hometown to have dinner with his parents (Toni Collette and David Thewlis). On their way home, a chain of events leads to a detour to Jake's old high school. The seemingly innocent pit stop leads into an evening of nightmares.
Premiering September 4 on Netflix, I'm Thinking of Ending Things appears to stay true to its source material while highlighting Kaufman's metaphorical style of storytelling. Speaking on the ambiguous tones of the film, Kaufman declared, `I'm not setting out to do something that `tops` some sort of brainteaser I might have done before. But there's no question that I'm trying to build on the stuff I've already done.`
