The series stars Odessa A'zion, Odley Jean, Maliq Johnson, Amalia Yoo, Amir Bageria, and more as high school classmates at Grand Army High School. Netflix's newest drama weaves the stories of each of the five students in with each other, tackling things like romance, friendship, school violence, social justice, and more. Grand Army is inspired by Cappiello's work as a teacher; she's also an executive producer on the show.
`Grand Army tunnels into a generation that's raging and rising,` the show's logline reads. `Five students at the largest public high school in Brooklyn take on our chaotic world as they fight to succeed, survive, wild out, break free and seize the future.`
The teaser, set to a saxophone rendition of The Star Spangled Banner, invokes some of the angst and existential unease seen in shows like Skins, Degrassi, or Euphoria, and it doesn't play like a glamorous coming-of-age story. The characters are clearly working through all kinds of problems - not limited to some kind of explosion they hear while in their school hallways, sending the students into a panicked lockdown.
Check out the teaser for Grand Army above. The show premieres on Netflix with nine 60-minute episodes on October 16, 2020.
