Canadian singer Avril Lavigne is engaged to rock band Sum 41's lead singer Deryck Whilbey.

The 20-year-old Lavigne's website issued a statement saying, "We can officially confirm that Avril and Deryck are in fact engaged!"

It adds: "Both are very excited and want to thank all their fans for their best wishes," reports People magazine.

Both Lavigne and the 25-year old Whilbey are Canadians and had been dating since last summer. Rumours of their engagement floated around when Lavigne was seen showing off a large ring to partygoers at Los Angeles.

Lavigne will soon start touring to promote her latest album "Under My Skin" which sold 2.6 million copies. Her fiancé's band Sum 41 will tour Europe.
