After two weekends at the No. 2 spot, the "Wedding Crashers" broke through to No. 1 with the comedy starring Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn pulling in $20.5 million in
the weekend box-office, according to preliminary studio estimates.
"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" slipped to No. 2 with $16.4 million after the adaptation of Roald Dahl's children's book held the top spot for the previous two weekends.
Since its premiere three weeks ago, the Johnny Depp film has earned more than $148.1 million in the US.
New release "Sky High", an action comedy set at a high school for superheroes featuring Kurt Russell and Kelly Preston, came in third place with $14.6 million, according to
the estimates released Sunday.
With an estimated $100 million production budget, "Stealth" had a rough maiden flight, finishing at No. 4 with $13.5 million. The film stars Josh Lucas, Jessica Biel and
Jamie Foxx as navy pilots taking on a rogue drone plane.
The romantic comedy "Must Love Dogs," starring Diane Lane and John Cusack, came in fifth with $13.05 million.
Ticket sales hit a new low over the weekend, with the top 12 movies pulling in $112.1 million, down a steep 21 percent from the same weekend last year. For the year, movie
attendance is down 10 percent compared to 2004.
