The Supreme Court today dismissed a PIL by a Gorakhpur-based NGO seeking to stop the screening of Hindi film 'Chingaari' alleging that it was derogatory to the dignity of women.

The PIL filed by Sankalp Bharti Sewa Sansthan was dismissed by a Division Bench of Justice Ruma Pal and Justice Dalveer Bhandari.

The petitioner had also sought a direction to appropriate authorities to cut scenes which "distorted Indian culture and history".

The NGO had alleged that the film, with a prostitute as its central character, contained language that was obscene, vulgar and abusive and needed scrutiny so as to send out "a healthy message" to society to eradicate the social evil of prostitution.

It had also questioned comparisons drawn between the protagonist and certain historical characters in the film as being "misconceived".
