Senior advocate Amit Desai, counsel for Salman, opened his arguments before the court of Justice A R Joshi, which is hearing the actor's appeal against his conviction and five year jail term. The lawyer also questioned the prosecution for not calling in singer Kamal Khan, who as per reports was an eyewitness in the case. Alleging deficiencies in the prosecution case, advocate Desai also said that the trial court erred in disregarding the evidence of defence witness Ashok Singh. The defence had brought in Singh as a witness before the trial court where he had claimed that it was in fact he and not Salman who was driving the car on the night of the incident. The defence also claimed that the records before the HC in the case were incomplete.
Salman was convicted earlier this year on the charge of culpable homicide and drunken driving and sentenced to five years in prison. The HC had suspended the sentence and released the actor on bail pending the hearing of his appeal.
Earlier during the hearing, advocate Desai moved an application seeking "guidelines on restriction of media". which is covering the hearing of the case. The HC directed that day to day reporting of the court hearing can be allowed, but restrained the media from recording the proceedings on audio and video or transmitting it live.
