A court case in Indore suggesting that India's most patriotic filmmaker is guilty of disrespecting the Indian flag by placing it wrongly on a coffin in the war epic LOC, has the
director perturbed, disturbed and angry.
Says JP, "What's this? It's unbelievable. Do I have to prove my credentials to anyone? Right now the matter is sub-judice so
I don't want to comment on it. But I'll say one thing I made a film called LOC. I let it run to four hours thereby incurring the wrath of distributors all over the country.
I
went from city to city talking to the family members of soldiers who had perished in the Kargil war. I voluntarily dropped some poignant portions because they were too
private and the wounds too raw.
I took the biggest financial gamble of my career to tell the world the true story of our jawaans at Kargil in LOC. I've made a film
called Border which to this day evokes a strong sense of patriotism.
And now I'm guilty of disrepect to an emblem of Indian nationality? Someone somewhere has
got the plot wrong. Right now I'm too busy editing Umrao Jaan to allow myself the luxury of feeling upset over this matter."
Adds a well-wisher from J.P. Dutta's crew, "These guys who have objected to the flag being placed wrongly in JP Saab's film don't know what they're talking about. It's all
about camera angles, nothing else."
