Film actress and former Uttar Pradesh Film Development Corporation Chairperson Jaya Bachhan was all set to re-enter Rajya Sabha as a Samajwadi Party candidate from
the state unopposed as no nomination was filed for the Upper House bypolls on the last date of filing of nominations today.
The other SP candidate Amir Alam's election to the Rajya Sabha was also a mere formality as the two SP candidates were the only ones in the fray for the two seats from
the state.
Jaya and Amir Alam had filed their nomination papers on June one last.
Bachhan was earlier elected to the upper house on an SP ticket on July 4, 2003.
She was disqualified from Rajya Sabha on March 16 last after a petition was filed before the Election Commission stating that she held an office of profit in the form of
chairperson of UPFDC.
The actress had resigned from the post days before filing her nomination papers for the Upper House.
Byelections for the two seats was scheduled for June 15.
The two seats had fallen vacant after the disqualification of Bachhan and the resignation of the Reliance group Chairman Anil Ambani (both SP members).
