Even though Salman's films break box office records, Akshay or Aamir's films become highest grossers, Shah Rukh's films continue to charm viewers for years and generations of cinephiles swear by Amitabh Bachchan's dialogues, it turns out that when these superstars pick a brush to paint, even their die-hard fans say thanks, but no thanks. That's what happened at a three-day charity art exhibition which was held in the city over the weekend and aimed at raising funds for the conservation of elephants.
The fiberglass elephants painted by these film stars are legit collector's items for cine buffs with an interest in art. Though they are sure to dig a deep hole in the buyers' pockets, what is a mere Rs 9 lakh when memorabilia of Hollywood actors are auctioned at exorbitant rates?!
However, a staff member at the exhibition told us, "The visitors are looking for art, and even though almost everyone goes to these five pieces first and appreciates them, art lovers end up ordering an actual artists' work instead." The items which were already sold were stacked on one side, however these five fibreglass jumbos, each priced at Rs 9 lakh, did not even receive a query from prospective buyers.
The jumbos painted by the film stars demonstrated their taste in art - Big B kept it simple, Salman and Shah Rukh splashed lots of colours, Akshay's had a religious touch and Aamir's art seemed to take forward theTaare Zameen Partheme, painting a starry night.
Apart from these celeb jumbos, there were plenty of other pieces, including those by veterans artists. And if you missed these star jumbos this time, don't worry, they will be back in the city next month.
