Says Ritu, "Konkona has a sty in her right eye which forced our shooting to halt. Her eye has swollen so much, makeup cannot comceal it from camera.
We decided to take a break on Wednesday and Thursday so that when Naseer arrives she'll be ready to face the camera. Maddy finished his work two days ahead of schedule. He's gone back to Chennai."
But ask Ritu if he's complaining. "No way! Madhavan finished his work ahead of schedule! Sunglass is my first bi-lingual. And I've never had so much fun. The bi-lingual is not so tough on the two actors Tota Raichaudhury and Madhavan who're playing Konkona's husband in the Bengali and Hindi versions.
They're made the same character into two separate people in the two versions. Maddy has played the husband slightly more racily. That extra pace is required in the Hindi version. Konkona adjusted beautifully to both versions.
For her it's like playing a double role in Bengali and English. Konkona had to do the same character twice. And she's such a fine actress, adapting to both versions effortlessly. Konkona has shaped into a terrific performer. My Dosar and Vishal Bhardwaj's Omkara are proof."
Ritu says the Bengali and Hindi versions of Sunglass have become two different films. Both Maddy and Konkona are very dusky in complexion. "They wore no makeup and they look superb together."
Ritu goes ga-ga over Maddy. "A Tamil superstar, but he's completely hassle-free. In no time at all he had my whole unit eating out of his hand. He has charged just a token fee(just like the rest of the cast, everyone is working almost free of cost).
And the production being in Bengali we couldn't provide him with the comforts of a Rang De Basanti. But he was a sport."
Naseeruddin Shah joined the unit in Kolkata on August 11. "Jaya-di joins us in September. I've grown up watching Jaya-di's films. She's very important to my growth as a director. I think Konkona has a lot of Jaya-di in her personality. They'll make a very convincing mother-daughter in Sunglass."
Any linguistic problems? "None! Since Maddy has lived in Bihar his Hindi is very good. In fact Maddy helped us out with the Hindi dialogues when we got stuck. Maddy has the capability to be funny and sad.
He has a role that's unintentionally comic. He has an extra-marital affair, with Raima Sen, after five years of marriage to Konkona."
Talk veers to Raima's grandma the legendary Suchitra Sen who has just won the Dada Saheb Phalke award. "I think awards stoppede mattering to her long ago. Once she retired from cinema she was completely out of it.
It doesn't matter to her whether she got it earlier or now. We're very happy for her. We're all proud of her. But who will receive it? Suchitra Sen would never be seen in public. I've never seen her although I've been to her house.
But I know her daughter Moon Moon and her grand daughters Raima and Riya. Riya and Raima aren't allowed to receive calls when they're with their grand-mother. We in Bengali cinema are completely in awe of her, totally petrified of her.
Even now her status is undiminished. In my Chokher Bali they referred to Raima as Suchitra Sen's grand-daughter rather than Moon Moon's daughter....Oops, I've to say good things about Riya too. She's constantly cross with me for taking Raima in my movies."
