It seems like a biopic season in Bollywood and why not because every biopic which got released till now has tasted the success on Box-Office, especially when it comes to sports biopic.
Like many sports biopic, 'Soorma' is also a story about a courage and passion. How a young lad wants to play for his country and how he follows his passion in spite of various obstacles, some of them were really hard to cross.
The story of 'Soorma' is based on the life of Hockey legend Sandeep Singh. How Sandeep started his journey, how he got into Hockey and what were the difficulties he faced and how he overpowered them, it's all about this.
The film's story has been narrated from Harpreet Kaur (Sandeep's love interest)'s point of view.
The film tells us how Sandeep and his older brother Vikram are keen enthusiasts of the game. But the abusive Coach Kartar Singh pushes the young Sandeep away from the hockey field, while Vikram forges ahead.
Years later, by happenstance, Sandeep meets the striking hockey player Harpreet Kaur on the hockey field, when he goes to deliver lunch to his older brother. Love blossoms and his interest in the game reignites.
How he pursues the game, gets selected to play for the country and is christened- "Flicker Singh" for his expertise, forms the crux of the narrative.
While initially, the tone of the film is light and frothy, the plot whips up a storm of emotions after the promising star is accidentally shot in the train while on his way to join his team due to leave for the World Cup.
How he overcomes paralysis of his lower limbs and re-joins the team for the Common Wealth Games in London, keeps you hooked to your seats.
Diljit Dosanjh as Sandeep Singh has delivered a memorable performance. He has lived his character throughout the film. The passion and sincerity in Diljit's eyes will win your heart.
Tappsee Pannu as Harpreet Kaur has also done a great job. Her on-screen chemistry with Diljit is a treat to watch.
Angad Bedi has brilliantly played the character of Sandeep's elder brother, Vikram. Other actors like Satish Kaushik as Sandeep's father, Seema Kaushal as mother and Vijay Raaz as Bihari Coach, all have done justice to their characters.
The music of the film is not much popular still 'Ishq Di Baajiyaan' and 'Pardesiya' will soother your ears.
The film has some really high production values, the cinematography is brilliant.
Though it's a sports biopic film has shown more personal aspects of Sandeep's life. There are some moments like hockey games which are beautifully shot make you feel that you are actually watching a live match.
Overall, 'Soorma' is a good film which replicates the courage and passion!
