The offensive remark? Himesh apparently accused R.D. Burman of singing nasally. To this the ever-spirit Ashaji responded, "If anyone says Burman Saab sang through his nose he should be slapped."
Himesh, in turn seems baffled by the 'stern' of events. "I don't know what has hit me. It was never my intention to insult Pancham-da (RD). How can I, when I've grown up learning music composition from Laxmikant-Pyarelal and RD?"
So what happened? "During an event I was asked about my 36 hits in two years, and what how did I answer charges of singing through my nose. To this I responded by saying Mukesh Saab, R.D. Burman Saab and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Saab were never accused of singing nasally. I only wanted to prove a point.
Now I realize I made a mistake. I should've never brought in the names of these greats in my argument. Choti mooh aur badi baat. It was a mistake."
About the diva's drastic response Himesh has just one thing to say. "I respect and admire Lataji and Ashaji. To me they're the pillars of the music industry. If I've unintentionally hurt Ashaji I want to apologize profusely. My upbringing and sanskar don't permit me to offend people who are far more distinguished and senior than I can ever be."
Himesh is now petrified of making media statements. "One never knows what one's words would be misconstrued into. I'm not here to create controversies. I just want to do my work. Now that I'm making my debut as an actor my responsibilities to myself and to my fans have multiplied. If I slip up, destiny will slap me."
