Outgoing Chief Justice Y K Sabharwal on Saturday snubbed Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty's efforts to
knock the doors of the Supreme Court, in connection with an obscenity case, through a letter.
The doors of the Supreme Court can be knocked by the poor through PILs or letters but not by the rich and
the mighty, he told reporters. He said that Shetty wrote to him some time ago seeking some sort of
guidelines for lawyers to deter them from filing "frivolous" cases against celebrities.
In her letter, the actress against whom a lawyer in Madurai filed a case of obscenity, complained that such
cases were being filed by vested interests only to harass celebrities.
Asked what action he had taken on the letter, Sabharwal said letters and PILs can be moved before the
Supreme Court only by the poor and those who cannot afford the cost of litigation.
"But those who have enough financial resources can fight their cases by hiring the lawyers," he said.
