Rating: ***1/2
Daaka is the story of Shinda (Gippy Grewal) and his friend Balli (Rana Ranbir) whos are trying to make something of their lives, but every time they try something it ends up having a bad day. Shinda is in love with a girl (Zareen Khan) but needs to stand on his own feet so he can ask for her hand in marriage.
When all their plans fail, Shinda and Balli make a plan to rob their village's bank. Things go South and they end up in jail intertwining their fates with a wanted criminal Sukhchain (Hobby Dhaliwal), who gets arrested for a Rs 50 crore fraud. How Shinda manages to use this situation in his favor is the story of this Pollywood money-heist.
Daaka's a perfect combination of all the masala elements. Romance, fun, drama, and action. The screenplay is good but a little stretched and the story is gripping.
There is a lot of suspense that keeps your eyes glued to the screen and keeps you guessing what actually is going to happen till the end which is a feat in itself for a Pollywood film.
Gippy Grewal is now an experienced actor and he proves that with every film. His performance in Daaka is one of his best to date and he plays Shinda with conviction and confidence.
Rana Ranbir as Balli is great too and his and Gippy's on-screen chemistry is the main thing that makes the film a delight to watch. Zareen Khan as the leading lady of the film is more of an eye-candy here and in the brief role she has, her expressions remain unchanged.
Hobby Dhaliwal as the scheming and plotting fraudster is excellent here and Mukul Dev as the dutiful and morally upright police inspector impresses too.
Baljit Singh Deo proves that his direction also gets better with each of his films and he is one of the few Pollywood directors who have an eye for even slightest of details. The music department is handled well by recreations of hit songs.
All in all, Daaka is more than everything you could ask for in a good Punjabi film. It is a step-up in the level of everything in Punjabi cinema which raises the bar for upcoming films. Go watch this one without any delay.
