The 2001 film 'Zubeidaa' starring Karisma Kapoor might be getting a sequel that will star the sisters together for the very first time. The Shyam Benegal film written by Khalid Mohammed was the concluding chapter in a trilogy that began with Mammo (1994) and Sardari Begum (1996). The film is based on the life of the ill-fated actress Zubeida Begum, who married Hanwant Singh of Jodhpur and was the mother of the film's writer, Khalid Mohammed. The film starred Karisma Kapoor, Rekha, Manoj Bajpayee, Surekha Sikri, Rajit Kapoor, Lilette Dubey, Amrish Puri, Farida Jalal, and Shakti Kapoor.
The film garnered the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi and won Karisma Kapoor a Filmfare Award for Best Actress (Critics). It is regarded by many critics as Kapoor's best performance. The film was highly acclaimed and is regarded as one of Benegal's best works blurring the lines of commercial and parallel cinema.
Khalid has been planning a sequel to the film. He mentioned in an interview that the sequel of Zubeidaa is in the early stages of development. Along with this, he is writing a novel 'Imperfect Prince' which will be an introduction to Zubeidaa's sequel. "I would like a director who understands my feelings. Few people who understand the culture and surroundings like Shyam Benegal are left."
If the film moves forward and Kareena and Karisma agree to be a part of it, it would be nothing short of a celebration for the fans of both the actresses.
