The COVID-19 pandemic has had a substantial impact on the film industry in 2020, mirroring its impacts across all arts sectors. Across the world, cinemas and movie theatres have been closed, and the film releases have been moved to future dates or delayed. As cinemas and movie theatres are closed, the global box office collections have dropped by billions of dollars, and nowadays, online streaming services are becoming more popular.
On July 16th, Netflix India announced 17 new web-series and movies which are going to stream directly on the platform. Few of the movies were supposed to release in theatres but amid the Coronavirus pandemic, filmmakers with their low-budget films rather decided to release those films digitally. Still, the air hasn't cleared as cinema halls across India are shut for an indefinite period. The Indian government is still confused about whether to reopen the theatres or not but on the other side of the world, things are getting back on the track.
On January 24th, approximately all Chinese theatres were shut by the government in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. But on July 20th, the Chinese Film Administration (CFA) opened cinema halls in low-risk regions but adhere to strictly follow the pandemic prevention measures.
A series of heart-warming movies including 'A First Farewell', 'Coco', and 'The Pursuit of Happyness' will try to heal the souls of Beijing moviegoers, who had to bid farewell to cinemas more than half a year ago due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
Meanwhile, talking about South Korea, then the Korean government had never closed or imposed restrictions on the cinema halls, but people restrained themselves because of the virus. On July 15th, the 'Peninsula' film was theatrically released in South Korea and made $2.4 million from 2,338 screens on its opening day. The film is a sequel to the 'Train to Busan' (2016) and now scheduled to be released in the United States of America on August 7th.
Now, the Indian audience and cinema hall owners are also waiting for government's green signal to reopen the theatres as Multiplex Association of India (MAI) has given the examples of other countries to the Indian government and urged them to re-open the theatres with all the precautionary rules. On the other hand, Rohit Shetty has already announced that his cop universe film, 'Sooryavanshi' will be going to release on Diwali. Now, we hope that Akshay Kumar's 'Sooryavanshi' will shine on box-office just as the 'Peninsula' is shining in South Korea.
