Before buying the cinematic rights, Disney+Hotstar might not realize the fact that Akshay Kumar's horror-flick 'Laxmii' will fail on the digital platform. The streaming service brought the rights at high prices and compared to the deal, Disney+Hotstar failed to gain more subscriptions as per the expectations. Although, Laxmii became the most-watched film on its release date leaving behind Sushant Singh Rajput's romantic film 'Dil Bechara'. After Laxmii performance on the OTT platform, other digital services are thinking before buying the rights of non-release films and the first film which came in the highlights is Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan starrer Coolie No 1.
As sources state that Amazon Prime Video is demanding an exclusive screening of Coolie No 1 for their internal content team. As OTT platforms are now looking at ways to earn revenue, a spike in the subscription is one of the major sources of income for them.
According to the trade sources present in the industry are speculating that OTT platforms will watch the film before purchasing its cinematic rights and then will decide it's value. If we talk about the film that gets a digital release and skipped theatrical releases in recent times include Gunjan Saxena, Sadak 2, Laxmii, Chhalaang and others.
As per the sources, `Bhuj: The Pride of India, which is another offering on Disney and Coolie No. 1, which has been acquired by Amazon, have both fetched huge amounts for direct to digital premiere and have been acquired by the giants without watching the film in advance. They paid the amount based on the names involved and the goodwill of the stakeholders in the market.`
Now we have to wait and watch whether makers will allow an exclusive screening for Amazon Prime and after watching it, will devalue the said deal amount.
