"It's easy to do a hatchet job and brand Mahatma a failed father, but it's difficult to make a film where you feel the pain suffered by all the characters," Tushar said.
Movie-goers are also curious about the Friday release since the movie portrays the strained relationship between the Father of the Nation and his eldest son Harilal, whom Gandhi eventually disowned.
Former theater director Khan elaborates: "The film is about Gandhi emerging as a world leader, trying to reconcile his principles with the needs of his son."
While Akshaye Khanna plays Harilal, little-known theater artiste Darshan Jariwala had to lose 20 kgs to fit into the role of Gandhi. The film shows how a rebellious Harilal converts his religion twice and eventually gets addicted to alcohol after Gandhi's refusal to unfairly help him further his career.
