"It's an outwardly solemn role but great fun," says Rajit Kapur who plays Khwaja Ahmed in in the children's film Kalpvriksh directed by Manika Sharma.
"I've never done a children's film before It's got lots animation and the kids are hugely talented, " confesses the talented but languishing actor, last seen as Konkona Sen-Sharma's self-serving husband in the aborted thriller Deadline.
This isn't the first time that Rajit Kapur is playing a Muslim character. In fact he has done so in so many films, is so fluent in Urdu and so Nawabi in his on –screen demeanour that he's often mistaken for a Muslim in real life.
"Yeah, I guess I've played a Muslim in Shyam Benegal's films like Mammo and Sardari Beghum. In fact I now play a character caught in a communal divide in Haroon Raashied's Khuda Hafiz."
Rajit is tight-lipped about this project. "It goes into areas of our life that question our conscience vis a vis the communal divide and the accompanying prejudices. This is the kind of project I believe in."
"My next release is about headlines. It's a film entitled Breaking News by N. Chandra and....hold your breath...for the first time I play a sleazy, flashny vulgar contractor named Talreja."
Married to Sarika in the film Rajit's character hits on young Smiley Suri (director Mohit's sister who made her debut in Kalyug), a poor hapless employee in the builder's office.
"She's just one his victims, I've never played anyone so cheesy in my life. He's such an a...hole. It required all my acting efforts to build the builder's character."
