Kondiela Sreeja and her husband Gadi Sirish Bhardwaj, who had married at an Arya Samaj temple in Secunderabad on Oct 17 against the wishes of their parents, surfaced from hiding to approach the court.
In the petition, filed by advocate Pinky Anand, Sreeja said she apprehended a repeat of the Rizwanur Rahman case and had fled from her home state Andhra Pradesh with her husband. "My life and liberty are in immediate danger," she said.
"There was no hope in getting justice in Andhra Pradesh so the couple approached the court for justice," said the petition, which did not mention the couple's local address.
After talking to the couple in the packed courtroom, Justice S.N. Dhingra directed the Delhi Police to provide then security after they formally apply for it.
When Justice Dhingra came to know that Sreeja was in the second year of her graduation, he asked about her age and whether she would continue with her studies.
Sreeja, attired in jeans and printed white shirt with vermilion on her parted hair, said she was 19 and would continue her studies by joining a correspondence course from here.
The judge asked her husband his age and qualification. Bhardwaj replied he was 22 and a qualified computer engineer. The court asked him how he would manage?
Bhardwaj said he had a family business and would start working for his livelihood.
Anand said several cases, including of kidnapping and forgery of passport, had been slapped against Bhardwaj.
She alleged that the friends and relatives of the boy who attended the wedding ceremony in Secunderabad were harassed and hounded by the police at the behest of the Telugu star.
Advocate Maninder Singh appeared in the court saying he had been approached by the maternal uncle of Sreeja to assure the court that there would be no threat to the couple from Chiranjeevi or his family.
He said that Chiranjeevi on Oct 20 appeared on television and blessed the couple after forgiving them. Singh assured the court that he would be filing a reply after seeking instructions from the father of the girl and there would be no threat to their lives.
Graphics Rizwanur Rahman, a Muslim, had married the daughter of Kolkata-based industrialist Ashok Todi against his wishes. He was found dead on Sep 21 near a railway track in Kolkata. The death led to uproar and the Central Bureau of Investigation is probing the case.
