The sensational headline bringing into global focus the whole question of teen pregnancy is now the basis of a ready-to-release film.
In Satish Kaushik's Tere Sang, the 17-year old hero (Ruslaan) gets his 15-year old girlfriend (Sheena) pregnant. The girl refuses to abort the baby.
The sensitive theme of the unusual love story is being kept under wraps for fear of unnecessary controversy.
Director Kaushik reluctantly reveals, "In Tere Sang we've gone into teen pregnancy. Nowadays pre-marital sex doesn't depend on the age of consent. We can't sweep promiuscuity among young teenagers under the carpet. It'll only aggravate the problem.
Was it difficult shooting love-making scenes with actors so young?
Kaushik smiles in embarrassment. "Fortunately my main lead weren't really 17 and 15. And really, today's kids don't need to grow up before knowing about the birds and the bees."
Adds the film's leading man Ruslaan, "I realize it's a very sensitive subject. But about time we came out with it. Fortunately I'm far older than the character I play, so I understood the situation maturely.
If my girlfriend got pregnant at 15 I'd definitely wat her to abort the baby. But if she decides to keep the baby I'd support her. I'm bracing myself to answer all the controversial questions when the film releases in September."
