Says Ritu, "I've been so involved with this whole Nandigram event that I haven't really been able to devote time to anything else. The Bengali project with Bipasha just happened because I had the script ready for a long time and I wanted to work with Bipasha. She's keen, so am I."
Curiously Ritu has met Bipasha just once for the project.
"But she's all for it. The role requires her to play a Bengali NRI returning to her roots in Kolkata. So her accented Bengali will suit the character just fine. In fact a lot of the film's space is taken up on the debate between English and Bengali."
The most interesting aspect of the project is its fusion of magic realism with the the of marital intimacy. "In that sense this film will be in the same genre as my Doshor where Prosanjeet and Konkona Sen had played an estranged couple."
Ritu proudly informs that Bipasha was actually his discovery.
"Well, in a way. You see I was the judge at her first beauty contest in Kolkata which was organized by Aparna Sen's magazine. There I chose her as the Sharun Sundari (autumn beauty). So I guess I should get some credit for where she is today."
"Bipasha sacrificed her annual holiday to accommodate this film," Ritu informs emotionally. "I want to make a film that does her proud. I genuinely believe we haven't seen even the tip of her talent as yet."
