The film's director says that it is a modern take on Satyajit Ray's 'Charulata.' "This is Satyajit Ray's Charulata in 2008. What would Charu do in today's day and age, living and working in the new urban chic corporate culture of New York," Manan questions.
The shooting of the film is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2008 in New York.
The actress first project was internationally acclaimed Pakistani film 'Khamosh Pani' with Kirron Kher. However, she success and fame came to her only after the sensational hit of Yashraj Films 'Chak De', a story based on glorious win of women hockey team of India.
Shukla potrayed Bindia Nayak, a headstrong senior hockey player in the movie co-starring actor Shahrukh Khan. Manan is known for making Indian-American films like 'Flavour' and 'Arya'.
His next film 'When Kiran Met Karen' is already generating a buzz and has been termed as the 'hottest love story on the Internet' by web-pundits. The film tackles the issue of lesbianism in a cross-cultural atmosphere.
Manan said he decided to cast Shukla in his film after watching her power packed performance in 'Khamosh Pani.' "I was stunned by Shilpa's performance in Khamosh Pani. 'Chak De India' only affirmed that she is one of the finest young actresses we have in Bollywood today," he was quoted as saying.
