Released worldwide on June 13, 'The Happening', co-produced by UTV Motion pictures along with the 20th Century Fox of the US at a budget of 55 million US Dollars, has grossed 63 million US Dollars across the world in its opening weekend alone, company sources said.
Directed by US-based filmmaker of Indian origin M Night Shyamalan, 'The Happening' grossed 31.5 million dollars in the US Domestic Office alone in its 3 day weekend.
The 'HULK', released on the same weekend at a production cost of 150 million Dollars, grossed 54.5 million Dollars in US Domestic as against 31.5 million US dollars earned by 'The Happening'.
''Though figures from the rest of the world are still flowing in, consolidated figures for 'The Happening' show close to additional 32 million dollars from the rest of the world, ''the sources said.
Released with over 4500 prints over 2986 theatres across North America plus another 5600 prints in the rest of the World, 'The Happening' opened to No. 1 in overseas territories excluding the United States with an estimated 32.1 mln Dollars from 5, 714 screens in 88 markets.
It delivered several number one launches led by France on 4.6 mln Dollars from 550 screens, Spain on an excellent 3.8 mln Dollars from 389 and Italy on 1.9mln dollars from 371 screens.
The film opened at third place in the UK with 3.4 mln dollars from 389 screens during the opening weekend, second in Mexico with 2.6 mln dollars from 557 screens.
In Russia, it earned 2.1 mln dollars from 482 screens, Germany 1.8 mln dollars from 550 screens (third place) and South Korea with 1.6 mln dollars from 240 screens (third).
In Brazil, the net earning in the opening weekend were 1.3 mln dollars from 181 screens (second) while in Australia, it was 1.5 mln dollars from 240 screens (fourth).
It is notable that 'The Namesake', the first international release for UTV, the first South Asian Company to foray into International Cinema, was produced for 8 million dollars and had Box office earnings of over 18 million dollars theatrically plus on equal amount further earned in Home Video and TV Syndication.
The opening garnered by M Night Shyamalan's first release 'Sixth Sense' in the US was 26 million dollars.
Featuring Hollywood actors Mark Wahlberg, Zooey Deschanel, John Leguizamo, Jeremy Strong, Alan Ruck, Victoria Clark, M. Night Shyamalan himself, Alison Folland, Kristen Connolly and Cornell Womack, 'The Happening' is a thriller about a family on the run from a natural crisis that presents a large-scale threat to humanity.
The film opens in Japan on July 26.
