Says Irrfan, "Two weeks ago I was summoned to be part of history. It's a project where one actor from every country is invited. We all recited Henrik Ibsen's Terje Vigen about the futility of war in different languages. My language was Urdu.
There was an actor each from Japan, France, etc. I represented our country alongside stalwarts like Gila Almagour who performed the Hebrew version, Jean Rochefort who performed the French version, the Norewigian performer Anne Grete Preus and Masatoh Ibu from Japan. Yup, I felt ten feet tall."
Irrfan spent months familiarizing himself with the thought and feelings in Ibsen's poems. "Luckily for me I'm no stranger to Ibsen. In fact my first film Jazeere by Govind Nihalani was based on Ibsen. My familiarity with Ibsen and my training in theatre gave me the confidence to carry this project off."
The collective performance named The Identity Of The Soul is now going to be on celluloid.
Says Irrfan, "Identity Of The Soul is about the futility of war. All us actors from across the world recited the same lines by Ibsen.
Now they're going to put up huge screen in countries all over the world and screen our poetic performance. They'll also screen it at the Gaza Strips so that both the Palestianians and Jews can watch the footage. This project was one of my proudest achievements."
Pride-worthy in its own right is the fact for the first time in his career Irrfan has song and dance to perform in Billo Barbar.
"Lara and I shot a song. I've always been impressed by her. She's very intelligent and down to earth. Lara and I represent the rustic aspect of the film. Shah Rukh is of course the glamorous aspect. So although this is a big authentic film I'm still not getting to do the glamorous stuff, " Irrfan says with a hint of regret.
"Though I'm not playing an easy character. My director Priyadarshan is very particular about how he wants my character."
"At this point in my career I'm looking for interesting stories where I can feel at home. So I don't think I'll be able to add to the conventional roles. When I heard the story of Billo Barbar had tears in my ears. Priyan keeps doing different genres of films. He goes basically by the story."
Another director Irrfan has enjoyed working with is Sanjay Gupta. "I've just completed Acid Factory with him. And we'll be doing another film together. I'm not comfortable doing so much work I need to re-charge my batteries."
