Rajiv Rai had married Sonam around a decade and a half back. Though there was a lot of age difference between the two, Rajiv and Sonam ended up falling in love during the making of Tridev and by the time Rajiv's next film, Vishwatma released they both were married.
Sonam left her acting career post marriage. After Gupt (1994), Rajiv Rai was targetted by underworld elements and following a firing on him outside his office, he decided to leave India for good.
He got settled in Los Angeles for the safety of his family. In recent years he tried to re-capture the glory of his once famous banner established by his dad, Gulshan Rai, Trimurti Films by making two more films post Gupt - Pyar, Ishq Aur Mohabbat (2001) and Asambhav (2005).
He shot both the films completely abroad and never came to India fearing a life threat from the mafia. Both these films were huge box office duds.
Sonam, for long had been wanting to make an acting comeback but Rajiv was not in its favour.
Sources close to them claim, "A lot of heated arguments happened between the two over her decision to restart her acting career in Bollywood.
She had even started getting feelers from big filmmakers and was desperately wanting to come back to Mumbai and start acting again. The couple mutually decided to stay separately.
Rajiv is hoping to make a comeback with a big budget multistarrer film. He is presently busy with its planning. Sonam meanwhile is trying to negotiate terms with all those who have shown keen interest in working with her."
