/> Jagmohan Mundra is no stranger to censorial hurdles. All his films have gone through major censorship problems.

But Shoot On Sight which releases this month in India was a special case...and got special treatment.

A reference to oppression of Muslims in Kashmir and to the word 'sausage' for the male private-part, were beeped out.

But Jag is not complaining. "It could've been much worse. During Bawandar I went through hell. The censor board loved Shoot On Sight. They objected to the mullah played by Om Puri making what they (the censors) thought to be an inflammatory remark on Kashmir."

The objectionable dialogue occurs when Om playing a radical Muslim from Pakistan based in Briton harangues on the oppression of Muslims the worldover.

"He mentions, Chechnya, Bosnia, Afghanistan, Palestine and several other countries and also Kashmir as a place where Muslims are oppressed. The Indian censorboard objected saying we can't have Kashmir being mentioned as a place where Muslims are oppressed. Fair enough."

So while Om's character will mention other countries which supposedly oppress Muslims, Kashmir has been beeped out.

Isn't that rather absurd?

Jagmohan disagrees. "We've to keep the Indian audiences' sentiments in mind. I respect the censorial decision."

The other beep occurs when a young British man brags to his friends about having scored with a Muslim girl. The dialogue was to the effect that although her religion forbade her from eating pork, "It didn't stop her from swallowing my sausage."

Laughs Jag, "It's a very boys' backchat kind of campus scene. This is how excitable young men talk with each other. Though I'm in principle opposed to hurting the sentiments of any community, the censorboard has to remember it's my characters and not me speaking.

Hence if Om Puri is playing a mullah who believes in his own peculiar jehad he will say Muslims in Kashmir are oppressed. In my Bawandar the censorbard had objected to all those maa-bahen ki gaali.

But that's how the characters speak.Ironically the former censorschief Asha Parekh wanted to ban Bawandar. But the current censor chief Sharmila Tagore loved the film. So censorial rules are open to many interpretations."

Interestingly while the censorboard was against using the term 'sausage' for the male genitals they didn't object to 'dick'.

Says Jagmohan, "They didn't mind any other word. But I had no time to re-dub the word. So I've just put a beep for 'sausage'.
