He decided to take the plunge into politics after seeing the lack of political initiative at that ghastly time.
Says Dutt emotionally, "The Presidency happened to Obama because of George Bush. Politics happened to me because of 26/11.
Every individual needs a push like Bush to make him do the right thing for his conscience and country. I was thinking of it for a while. I was hesitating because I'm not a political person. I don't understand the politics in the film industry, let alone the politics of the nation. I love my film industry and I love helping our society in my own little way."
26/11 changed Dutt's life and made up his mind about joining politics. "How could those ten terrorists just stroll into our city like it was a park and do what they like?
How our forces fought with those ten terrorists on that night without proper facilities and the way our politicians were held up to ridicule for their supposed inadequacy, I felt people like us who have a face and a clout need to come out of our cocoons and take the plunge.
At least I'd set an example in politics. Like-minded people who are afraid to join politics may be encouraged to do so."
Sanjay returned from Lucknow after a euphoric flash-visit with his wife. "It was an amazing experience. And I'm so lucky to have my wife Maanyata by my side. She's brought much-needed stability into my life. She put on the right track, gave me a home and a sense of belonging. Maanyata has changed a lot in my life. Thank God I have her."
Fortunately for Sanjay his daughter Trishala from his first marriage has hit it off well with his second wife. "Maanyata and Trishala love each other.
They spend the most amazing times together. All three of us had the most rocking time together in the Bahamas recently when I was shooting for Blue. Then Maanyata also visited Trishala in New York where the two girls in my life went shopping and sightseeing together.
My daughter is a wonderful girl and she really vibes well with Maanyata. Just to see them together fills my heart happiness."
At the moment in a new trendy and bizarre haircut he looks anything but Gandhian. "It's the look for Soham Shah's film Luck. I'm leaving for South Africa to shoot for the film. So you see films remain my top priority."
