After making films like No Smoking and Dev D Anurag Kashyap's all set with Gulal.

It is believed he wrote scripted Gulaal when he was angry and upset with everything around him.

According to a close pal of Anurag, making Gulaal was very close to his heart as he was in the most terrible time. He was highly influenced by Sahir Ludhianvi's songs from Pyaasa, especially ‘Yeh duniya agar mil bhi jaaye to kya hai'. Gulal is a tribute by Anurag to all those poets who wrote such aspiring, inspirational poems.

Though it is his most angry film, Anurag has done extensive research on the history of Rajputs and their stories of the formation of Republic India. Anurag spent a lot of time with the royals of Jaipur and read history from Sharda Dwivedi to Romila Thapar, he also read the Patiala Report and then scripted Gulal.
