Nandita Das has always been unconventional - be it her association with NGO, her experience of street theatre or her choice of film roles. But last week, she silenced her critics with a sterling performance in an English play, The Spirit of Anne Frank, directed by Roysten Abel, which also had Zohra Segal And Shabana Azmi in the lead.
Nandita, for her part, contributed much more than just her skills. Like everyone else, she was expected to write her own lines and when she did deliver them, theatre lovers marvelled at her complete ease with a medium that was hitherto an unexplored territory for her. When asked about her experience on stage, she quipped, "I`ve always loved theatre, dabbled in it for long but never did it professionally."
And with more offers pouring in, does it mean she would have less time for the silver screen now that she is getting to do what she enjoys doing more? She has always been unequivocal about the portrayal of women in Hindi cinema being `demeaning and unrealistic.` They may be only a few, but you do have a following, Nandita. And needless to say, your absence from the screen would result in their missing you even if it means having a closer view of your histrionic potential in a live performance.
