As of now, the two biggest money spinners have ironically been flops (Chandni Chowk To China, Delhi 6) while none of the three successful films - Raaz - The Mystery Continues, Dev D and Slumdog Millionaire has crossed even the 30 crore mark.
With barren times ahead, it is only a saddening situation for Bollywood, something which brings us to the first prospective bona fide blockbuster in the making Kambakkht Ishq.
As of now, this Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor starrer is confirmed for a 29th May release and if that indeed happens, it is surely going to be 'balle balle' time for Bollywood.
A sure shot success in the making, this Sajid Nadiwadala production has a lot riding on it and is one film which has in it to turn out to be that multi crore HIT that has been evading Bollywood in 2009.
Month of June should only get better though with at least three biggies lined up for release - Kaminey, Luck and Love Aaj Kal. Thankfully each of these is carrying a good vibe around it and there is no reason why end of second quarter of 2009 shouldn't make way for an even better and encouraging second half of the year.
Kaminey has Shahid Kapoor (in a double role) coming along with Priyanka Chopra in a Vishal Bhardwaj film - a potent mix indeed.
Luck has Soham Shah returning after Kaal and bringing with him a massive cast comprising of Sanjay Dutt, Imran Khan, Mithun Chakraborty, Danny Denzongpa and Shruti K. Haasan. An action entertainer, it should be the masala popcorn dish of the season.
Moving away from masala though, there should be some sugar and saccharine in the offering with Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone starrer Love Aaj Kal. Name Imtiaz Ali is good enough and there is no reason why he shouldn't be able to recreate the magic of Jab We Met and Socha Na Tha all over again.
These are the reasons why one can believe that Bollywood is indeed eyeing some better times ahead. Months so far may have been horrendous while April and (most part of) May do not sound much promising either.
However, month to follow should so the trick with New York, Life Partner, Raftaar 24 x 7, Shortcut - The Con is On, Jashn, Kaminey, Luck and Love Aaj Kal managing to bring back the audiences into the theaters.
One thing is for sure though. If these films indeed turn out to be good, then we may also end up relishing 'dessert' hits with small movies managing to bring in moolah. But then if these aforementioned films fail (God forbid), then it would be quite a monumental task to win the trust and confidence of audiences in second half of the year.
Here is keeping one's fingers crossed because especially in such trouble times, aakhir Bollywood ka kal kisne dekha!
