Sports based films, especially those revolving around cricket, have always aroused a certain level of curiosity among
audiences. After all, India is a cricket crazy nation where many Indians literally eat, sleep and breathe cricket. Now,
with the cricket frenzy at its peak courtesy the on-going IPL, expect to see more such films based on cricket.
Probably the one film which is almost directly inspired by the IPL is a film called Kirkit. The film is directed by Shashi
Preetam and despite the fact that it stars no big names, what caught our attention was the hilarious tagline of the film
which asks "Can the Mumbai Vadapavs defeat the Hyderabadi Biryanis?"
What's more the poster of the film
actually bears the photos of these two prominent delicacies- Vadapav and Hyderabadi Biryani.
In case you are still wondering what the film is all about, then well, Kirkit is a story of two groups of 5 boys each from
Mumbai and Hyderabad who are on a special 'Holiday' to Goa. In Goa, the two groups run into each other and this
eventually leads to a small fight. The two groups decide to resolve the matter over a tennis-ball cricket match (a-la
Lagaan).
What is outrageously funny is the fact that the two teams call themselves Mumbai Vadapavs and Hyderabadi Biryanis.
The match between them becomes the most talked-about event of Goa, and the small tussle turns into a strong rivalry
as the players play passionately for the pride of their cities.
Soon the match gets complicated as many
whacky and dangerous outsiders get involved in it. One of them plans to take this mad fight of the boys to the next
level and make it into a national sensation. And thus comes into being, the catch line of the film Kitkit + Cricket =
Kirkit.
With no new films being released at the multiplexes courtesy the on-going strike, many small time filmmakers are
cashing in on this opportunity by releasing their films. Kirkit is one such film but will it make it to the big league of
cricket based films such as Lagaan and Iqbal? Your guess is as good as ours!
As for which team wins the match in the end, is it the Mumbai Vadapavs or the Hyderabadi Biryanis? To find that, you
will have to watch Kirkit. We just hope the match ends in a tie...that way we'll get to see an exciting super over for the
first time in a Bollywood film. What say?
