All hopes were pinned on Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum opus ‘Devdas' to etch itself on the nomination board for the Oscar's best foreign film category. The industry, the filmmakers and the cast of the film were all enthused and optimistic about the way ‘Devdas' had been soaring its way through the various film festivals and won appreciation from audiences' across the globe.
‘Devdas' is even the first Hindi film to be nominated for the BAFTA (British equivalent of the Oscars). But again, the magic word out here is ‘luck'...and more often than not this plays the biggest role of all. ‘Devdas' couldn't make it to the final round of the Oscars this year. The final four in the best foreign film category are – the Mexican film- ‘The Crime Of Father Amaro', Hero (China), Man Without A Past (Finland), Nowhere In Africa (Germany) and Zus And Zo (The Netherlands).
The nominations were a verdict of 5,816-strong Academy of Motion Picture voters, whose secret ballots had been locked for auditors' scrutiny since 29th January. There's no hope lost yet, the BAFTA Awards are still to make their judgement. Besides, there's always more to hope for...for there's always another chance.
