Finally ‘Sonu-Sweety' puts an end to his really long sabbatical. "I was sitting at home doing nothing for years so I took up Sonu-Sweety, " unfortunately says an actor of his stature and calibre.
Harking back to his past serials, he is known to have portrayed the ordinary characters in his extra-ordinary way. "I see only one thing while taking up the character; what I can do with it. I have done most of the characters which others would not do, and that has been the high point for me.
I am happy those run-of-the-mills roles are done by others. Honestly as far as this role is concerned, anyone could have done it, " verbalises Varun.
He briefs about the show with no excitement, "It is a regular story of a middle class couple from Punjab. My wife in the serial does not have backing of education; therefore, she is ignorant about the difficulties in meeting both ends.
She aspires to be one among the high-society women. Unfortunately, her husband cannot afford to meet her demands and lands in embarrassing situations.
" He adds further, "Though we are Punjabi couple there is not much of Punjabi touch in my accent, as Delhi-based-Punjabi's definitely have the lilt of Punjab but do not converse completely in Punjabi".
He asserts his disappointment, "Indians only understand nada-khul comedy, we are still not ready for black comedy. ‘Ek Chabhi ...' was not understood by most, in fact many found it boring."
Well as Varun questions the intelligence of viewers, let's all be reminded that he is popular doing the same ‘run-of-the-mill stuff' that has been done to death by others.
