Raima Sen was last seen making news in Bollywood with her films like 'Godmother' and 'Daman'. Now this first born to the once Oomph.. queen Moon Moon Sen is back in news with her potryal of a teenager exploring her sexuality with another teenage girl in director Subrata Sen's 'Nil Nirjane'. Though she insists that the film is not about lesbianism but the fact remains that her film was posted on a lesbian website. "When the script was first narrated to me, I asked the director if my character in the film was lesbian. He was categorical I let the audience decide.", says Raima.
In 'Nil Nirjane' , Sen is cast as the diminutive, shy 18-year-old daughter of an unwed mother , played by Moon Moon Sen herself, who is drawn to Mou, her teenage partner in the film. "Although I didn't exactly relate to my character, I could certainly empathise with someone her age trying to step out of protective moulds to explore her sexuality," says Sen. According to her, the two girls in the movie often come close to crossing the line. "Mou's character is more 'masculine' and there are shades of lesbianism in the way I react to her on screen. There is even a scene where my character initiates a kiss between the two."
The young actress is still to recover from the fact that India's first full-length digital feature film was a huge crowd-puller in conservative Kolkata and other smaller towns. "I was shocked because I never thought a film with such an unconventional storyline would prove to be a hit with the audiences. At least people are no longer hypocritical. Obviously, lesbianism as an idea is far more acceptable today," she quips.
