Here is a film that will shock you to the core. A film called Matrubhoomi: A Nation Without Women. You must be wondering how? Picture this...
The year is 2050 and there aren't many women left due to female infanticide and patriarchal set-up in the country. It's the time when women are sold and morals of the society have eroded a long time back. The sanctity of relations has been mucked up.
Woman are being raped in a place she used to call home.
Set in rural Bihar, it narrates the story of one such hapless woman, Kalki (Tulip Joshi). One Ramcharan buys a bride for all his five sons. But what aghast is that he demands the conjugal rights with himself.
Kalki plots an escape bid with the help of a ‘low-caste' servant boy but fails. The brothers beat the servant mercilessly and Kalki ends up in a cowshed where, she is gang-raped by the brothers and ‘low castes'.
All hell breaks loose when Kalki becomes pregnant and the whole village draws daggers to claim the paternity. A caste-war ensues, killing nearly all as Kalki gives birth to a girl. The Mahabharata reference gives way to the forecast of Vishnu's incarnation, Kalki, bringing an end to Kalyug.
Tulip Joshi, who was last seen in a feel-good 'Mere Yaar ki Shadi Hai' refused to portray Kalki before she decided to take up the challenge. The film is directed by Manish Jha and has won critical acclaim worldwide.
Will the audience, thriving over the staple diet of bump and grind kitsch, be able to accept this fictional but mercilessly brute film, remains to be seen.
