A guest's expensive diamond earrings went missing at Apoorva Lakhia's bash at home. And were returned the next day. This one had the makings of a thriller...

"Why do people steal things that do not belong to them? Come on...."

The party might have ended but Apoorva Lakhia isn't going to forget it in a hurry, as his status message on a social networking site indicates.

The filmmaker recently got into a tough spot when one of the guests at his bash found her diamond earrings were missing from her handbag.

Lakhia was alarmed as the party was held at his home and only a few family and close pals were invited. Says a source present at the bash, "It came as a shock to the host and to everyone present. The earrings could not have vanished into thin air. To pacify his guest, Apu ordered a search of everyone present."

What followed, however, was even more high drama. Adds the source, "As soon as he said everyone's belongings would be searched, one of the guests -- actress Shveta Salve -- got busy on her mobile phone. She suddenly said that her mother had met with an accident and ran out."

Salve's sudden, strange behaviour baffled the guests as she then made a hurried exit. What shocked Apu more was the actress landing up at his home the next day with the earrings. She allegedly told him that she had taken them and was returning it. But she begged him not to tell anyone that it was her doing -- and that she was willing to do anything to keep it a secret."

Tracing the chain of events the source explains, "The guest whose earrings had gone missing had used the washroom at Apoorva's home but forgot her bag inside. Shveta had used the washroom immediately after. Later when the guest got her bag out, the earrings had disappeared. But since she could not pinpoint any one suspect, the director suggested a search to help her out."

However, when asked about the episode, Lakhia maintains, "I'm out of the country and have no clue about the incident. There was no party at my house. Nothing of this sort happened."

However, our source maintains, "If his status message on Facebook and the comments that follow are anything to go by (Sample this: Apoorva replies to Kavita Kaushik when asked 'who stole what', "Call me, ill tell you, itll blow your mind, ek episode daal dena tere show pe."), that claim of his rings hollow."

Meanwhile, Shveta says, "I have no clue about it. I did not attend any party."
