The petitioner named Vinod Kumar Kanojia, the Chairman of 'Hindustan Kanojia Organisation of Dhobis' demanded a change in the name of the film from Aamir Khan. He claimed that it is making caste division in the dhobi community.
However, the plea has been rejected by a Division Bench led by Chief Justice Dipak Misra. The bench found no merit in the plea and it was no way mocking the community of dhobis.
The court said that the title Dhobi Ghat is not at all a reference to the community and it just refers to place used in common parlance.
Justice Misra termed the PIL to be 'an abuse of the process of law' and Kanojia was fined with Rs 25, 000, which will go to the Blind Relief Association.
Kanojia had also requested the censor board to review the title of the film before its release so that it does not encourage any caste division.
